Trauma doesn't just leave emotional scars. It can significantly shape a person's mental health and their relationship with substances in ways that aren't always apparent from the outside. Understanding that connection is an important step towards lasting recovery.
When someone experiences trauma, their nervous system is impacted. Feelings of fear, shame, numbness, or hyperawareness can stay with someone long after the event itself has passed. Some people turn to alcohol or drugs as a way to manage those overwhelming emotions, to quiet intrusive memories, ease chronic stress, or simply feel some sense of control. This is often called “self-medication,” and while these tendencies may offer short-term relief, they also deepen the struggle over time. What makes this especially difficult is that mental health conditions, like anxiety, depression, and PTSD, frequently co-occur with substance use disorders. The two can reinforce each other in a cycle that feels impossible to break. Mental health symptoms can drive substance use, and substance use can worsen mental health symptoms. Over time, both can become harder to manage without professional support.
One of the most important things research has shown us is that treating only substance use often isn't enough. When underlying trauma is unaddressed, the emotional toll that drove someone to use substances in the first place is still there, and relapse risk remains high. Truly moving towards lasting recovery requires working through both the trauma and the substance use together, in a way that feels safe and supported. This integrated, trauma-informed care is an important aspect of how Tellurian approaches treatment.
At Tellurian Behavioral Health, we offer a full continuum of care designed to meet individuals where they are in their recovery journey and provide the right level of support at the right time. Our outpatient services offer flexible treatment options for individuals balancing work, school, family, or other daily responsibilities while receiving support for substance use and mental health concerns through counseling, therapy and medication management. One of the major benefits of outpatient care is the ability to address real-world reminders of our trauma and challenges as they arise while still remaining connected to treatment and support systems. Our day treatment program provides a more structured level of care with intensive therapeutic programming throughout the week while still allowing individuals to return home at the end of the day, creating opportunities to actively apply coping skills and recovery strategies in everyday life. For those needing a higher level of support, our residential treatment programs offer a safe, immersive, and highly structured environment where individuals can step away from outside stressors and focus fully on healing, stabilization, and long-term recovery.
What makes Tellurian unique is the strength and diversity of our team. Our programs are supported by compassionate and highly credentialed professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, dual-diagnosis clinicians, therapists, peer support specialists, behavioral health technicians, and case managers who work together to provide comprehensive, person-centered care. Many members of our team also bring lived experience and a deep understanding of recovery, helping us create an environment built on empathy, clinical excellence, and genuine human connection.
Don’t go it alone. Our experienced, compassionate team is proud to help people just like you through what may be the most challenging time in their lives.
