What Is Toxic Shame & How Does It Affect Mental Health?

Shame is distinct from guilt. Guilt says 'I did something bad.' Shame says 'I am bad.' This internalized sense of defectiveness, often rooted in trauma, abuse, abandonment, or a lifetime of critical messages, drives a wide range of behavioral health struggles. Toxic shame is a core driver of addiction (substance use as escape from shame), eating disorders (shame about body), depression, anxiety, PTSD, and self-harm. At Tellurian, shame is treated not as a character flaw but as a clinical condition, one that responds to evidence-based therapy, compassionate clinical relationships, and community support. We help patients distinguish truth from shame-based distortions, rebuild self-worth, and develop healthier relationships with themselves and others.

Our Shame Treatment Programs

Tellurian treats shame across a continuum of care — from individual outpatient shame counseling to intensive day treatment and residential programs where shame is addressed as part of comprehensive behavioral health care. Our clinicians draw on evidence-based approaches that directly address shame, self-worth, and identity, helping patients develop a more compassionate and accurate self-understanding.

Tellurian's shame programs support individuals experiencing:

  • Shame rooted in trauma, abuse, or neglect
  • Toxic shame driving addiction or substance use
  • Shame connected to eating disorders or body image
  • Survivor guilt and shame following traumatic events
  • Imposter syndrome and shame in professional or academic contexts
  • Shame related to mental illness diagnosis
  • Shame following incarceration, job loss, or relationship breakdown

Some of the Treatments We Incorporate:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • EMDR
  • Group therapy
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Mindfulness and self-compassion practices
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Individual Therapy

Shame work at Tellurian begins gently — with a trauma-informed intake process designed to make you feel safe before the deeper work begins. Your clinician will help you identify shame triggers, understand the origins of shame-based beliefs, and systematically rebuild a more accurate and compassionate self-narrative. Group therapy is an important component, as hearing others' stories and being witnessed in your own is powerfully healing for shame.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
